Home Videos – Now & Then – What do you capture?

I just finished watching some family videos recorded between the 1920’s and 1960’s and something occurred to me. Why is it that in a time when having such a recording device was really something special, such ordinary things got recorded? Things like wiping the kitchen counter, getting into a car, making a pit stop at the local package store, scenery with no people in view, a cat or dog just sitting there not doing anything particularly cute or special, shots of only the food at the table, a sweeping view of the living room furniture with no people in the room…
Personally, this is actually the stuff I look for in old videos of my own family – you remember the “big thing” that happened and find yourself looking in the background at the spectators that weren’t recorded as much and long to see the “everyday” stuff of how it was back when.  You only wish you’d done a sweeping shot of your family room at the time.  I’m always looking for what happened in-between the major events.
Yet now, with recording devices so common practically every other person has one (maybe more), why is it we only seem to record/share these extraordinary, exciting, amazing, and/or planned events and hardly anything ordinary/routine/mundane/everyday? Shouldn’t it be the other way around?
The following are some of those very ordinary things my grandfather recorded and I’m glad he did. Who would record this nowadays?
Now I’m considering just setting our camera up on a tripod and recording ourselves just having a normal, every night dinner on a weekday… just to have that.
